Among 100s of ways to make Palak Dal, this is the most authentic Maharashtrian way of making delicious palak dal. In Maharashtra, this recipe is widely known as Dal Bhaji. This seems to have originated in Nagpur, hence it is called Nagpuri Dal Bhaji often. This is delicious alternative to your regular dal. This Dal Bhaji can also be made without Onion-Garlic, thus caters to majority of Indians. Added peanuts, jaggery & tamarind is what differentiates it from the regular Nagpuri Palak Dal Bhaji and makes it worth a try. This Palak Dal makes a mouthwatering combination when served with hot rice or chapati.

So, let’s get started with Nagpuri Dal Bhaji;

 

Preparation Time: 10 Minutes

Cooking Time: 20 Minutes

Total Time: 30 Minutes

Serves for: 3

 

Ingredients:

For Dal Bhaji:

1) 1 bunch spinach

2) 2 chopped onion

3) 1 cup green moong dal

4) 2 tsp chickpea flour

5) Tamarind

6) 1 tsp jaggery

7) 1 tsp ginger crushed

8) 1 tsp peanuts

9) Salt as per taste

 

For Tempering:

1) 1 tbsp. Oil

2) 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

3) Pinch of asafoetida

4)  1 tsp chopped garlic

5) Turmeric powder

6) Red chilly powder

 

Method:

Wash and cook green moong dal and peanuts in a kadai or pressure cooker.

Add chopped spinach, cover with a lid and let it cook on a medium flame

Once this is cooked, add crushed ginger and besan paste.

Add Tamarind, jaggery and salt to this mixture.

Heat oil in another pan, add mustard seeds, asafoetida, chopped garlic, chopped onion and sauté till they turn translucent.

Add turmeric powder, red chilly powder and sauté for a minute or till the oil separates.

Add cooked dal-spinach mixture and mix well.

Garnish with chopped coriander.

Serve hot with chapati or rice.

6) Add cooked dal-spinach mixture and mix well.
