Mattha is made from yogurt (curd) and is watery or of a thin consistency.
Matha in English is ‘spiced buttermilk’. Is also known as ‘taak’ in Marathi or ‘chass’ in Hindi.
The drink is said to have many benefits asper Ayurveda.
This drink is consumed as a summer appetizer. It help digestion.
The ingredients that go in are chopped coriander leaves, mint leaves and spices (mentioned below in the mattha recipe).
You can enjoy mattha in almost all the Maharashtrian weddings during the summers, served in vaattis (small bowls).
Mattha makes a wonderful couple with masale bhat in the weddings.
It also complements the sweet jalebi.

Serves for 3.
Ingredients:
1) 2 cups fresh yogurt
2) 1 liter Water
3) 1 inch ginger
4) 2 Green chillies
5) 1/2 tsp black salt
6) 1/2 tsp cumin seeds powder
7) 1/2 tsp coriander powder
8) Pinch of asafoetida
9) Salt as per taste
10) Pinch of sugar
11) Chopped coriander leaves for paste
12) Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
Method:
Grind together ginger, green chillies and chopped coriander leaves and make a fine paste and keep aside.
Whisk yogurt and add ground paste, asafoetida, black salt, salt, sugar, cumin seeds powder, coriander powder and 1 liter water gradually.
Mix thoroughly.
Adjust salt and chopped coriander leaves, stir it and keep in the refrigerator to chill.
Serve chilled after dinner or lunch.
Method:

4) Serve chilled after dinner or lunch.
