Mango Rice | Raw Mango Rice

 

 

 

The small, sour tempting raw mangoes have started to flood the markets.

How can we miss using them in our recipes? Mango rice is one of its kind that should not be missed in summer season.

This rice is very popular in the Southern India.

Maavinakayi Chitraanna, Mangai Sadam, Mamadikaya Pulihora are some of the names for this recipe down in the South.

We here share our version to satisfy the Maharashtrian taste-buds.

The dish is mild tangy and delicious. The rice made looks tempting and flavourful-you may check out the images posted here.

Mango rice is one of the best lunch-box recipes.

You may also add grated coconut to the recipe and have yet another twisted version.

Try adding cashews instead of peanuts for a richer variety.

Serve it hot with potato chips or roasted papad.

Preparation Time: 5 Minutes

Cook Time: 10 Minutes

Total Time: 15 Minutes

Serves for 2.

 

Ingredients:

1) 2 cup rice

2) 1 Medium size raw mango

3) 1/2 tsp chana dal

4) 1/2 tsp urad dal

5) 1 tbsp peanuts

6) 1/2 tsp ginger paste

7) 2 green chillies or 1tsp red chili powder

8) Salt to taste

 

Ingredients For Tempering:

1) 1 tbsp Oil

2) 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds

3) 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds

4) Pinch of asafoetida

5) 4-5 Curry Leaves

6) 1 Red chilly

 

Ingredients for Garnishing:

1) Chopped coriander

2) Grated fresh coconut

 

Method:

Wash and rinse rice and soak for at least 1/2 an hour.

Soak chana and urad dal for at least 10 minutes.

Add little salt and prepare a plain rice and keep aside to cool down.

Wash, peel the raw mango. Grate it and keep aside.

Heat oil add mustard seeds wait till it crackle, then add cumin seeds, soaked dal and saute it.

Add curry leaves and red chilly.

Add green chilly, ginger paste, asafoetida and turmeric powder.

Add grated mango and saute it for 2-3 minutes and then add plain rice and mix it well.

Keep lid and let it cook for another  2 minutes on medium low heat.

Garnish with chopped coriander and grated fresh coconut.

Serve hot.
