We tried take-and-bake pizza from Piggly Wiggly, Kwik Trip and four other stores and ranked them
My home room felt suffocating from the presence of relatives and friends.They were sitting on the couch, resting on pillows, and eating pizza when they saw something.They were also utterly deafeningly quiet.
This is due to the fact that there was a lot of meticulous note-taking going on during my pizza party.″Wow, you people are taking themselves so seriously,″ I said.The response from my sister-in-law, Annie, was, ″Well, you assigned us a severe duty.″ And she was absolutely correct.As a result, I had assigned them a significant assignment, as pizza is an extremely serious business.
I had gone to six different stores in the Milwaukee area — Sendik’s, Piggly Wiggly, Walmart, Kwik Trip, Aldi, and Meijer — and purchased a take-and-bake pizza from each of them.I had spent about an hour in each store.When it comes to making a quick pizza supper at home, the majority of the people I know — and the majority of the people at my pizza party — choose for frozen pizza.
Take-and-bake pizzas are similar to frozen pizzas in that they may be purchased, taken home, and baked in the same length of time as frozen pizzas.However, because they are prepared on-site or locally, they are more fresh.To find out whether they were any better, I asked my visitors a question.And how do they stack up against one another?Each of the pizzas was tasted by a total of eleven persons.My mother, who does not typically enjoy non-homemade pizza, participated, as did a friend of my teenage daughter, who told me she is the pickiest pizza eater in her family, my in-laws, who have never met a frozen pizza that contained enough cheese, and an 11-year-old who I heard from a reliable source (her mother) had eaten an entire pizza by herself.
I didn’t want anybody to make the assumption that Sendik’s, the most costly pizza of the lot, would be superior to Aldi, the least priced pizza of the bunch.In addition, I didn’t want my father and father-in-law, who are huge fans of all things Kwik Trip, to be unfairly prejudiced.Consequently, I decided that the taste test should be conducted in a blind manner, with only my elder daughter — who could not participate owing to food allergies — and I being the only ones who knew where the pizzas had come from.
I labeled the pizzas with numbers, and everything went smoothly, with the exception of a short moment of fear when I forgot which pizza I had in the oven.First and primarily a mother who has organized innumerable sleepovers, birthday parties, and family meals, I took the ages of my youngest attendees into consideration and picked the style of pizza from each supermarket that had the lowest common denominator — cheese — when making my selection.In addition, that option worked out well in terms of comparability since, despite the fact that there was a wide range of toppings available at the stores, the one pizza that was constantly accessible everywhere was the cheese pizza.
A few things became clear early on

The response from my 11-year-old daughter, Wendy, was, ″Next time give us nicer pizza!″ Furthermore, it became evident during the early rounds of taste testing that the pizzas we had believed would do the best because they were more expensive and more aesthetically packed would not be our front runners.This was confirmed after several rounds of taste testing.Meanwhile, Alex and I were silently giggling in the kitchen, as our party guests shouted about how much they like the very affordable Piggly Wiggly pizza, which had been packed in an unassuming (and somewhat flimsy) plastic wrap.In addition, I quickly discovered that when you have a room full of Wisconsinites, the cheesiest will always be the greatest option.Here’s what we came up with.
Winner: Piggly Wiggly

It is common procedure in her home to top pizza with cheese, so she was pleasantly delighted to see that this was the way the pizza came out of the packaging.
Second place: Meijer

The plot of the novel The cheesiness of the Meijer pizza was also a standout feature.The only difference between this pizza and the Piggly Wiggly pizza was the type of dough used.However, my pizza tasters were unanimous in their praise for the sauce and cheese distribution on the Pig’s pizza, but they weren’t as enthusiastic about the dough.
While the Meijer pizza had a lot of cheese and didn’t have as much taste as the Pig pizza, the dough was crisp and tasty, according to the people who commented on it.Kassidy Molumby, a 15-year-old girl, stated, ″The cheese was very delicious.It tasted similar to Pizza 3 (Piggly Wiggly), but with a lot more white cheese.It was fantastic.″ The ″white-cheese″ Meijer pizza was also a favorite of the smaller children over the Piggly Wiggly pizza.They were, in fact, the only ones who didn’t like for the Piggly Wiggly pizza they tried.The younger generation has come to the conclusion that there is such a thing as too much cheese, especially when it is overly oily and ″yellow.″ However, when it’s paired with a heartier crust, a lot of cheese gets the thumbs up from the little ones.
Third place: Walmart

The plot of the novel As we began to fall farther and further down the rankings, a pattern began to develop.There isn’t enough cheese.The amount of cheese on the Walmart pizza wasn’t a favorite of the tasters, but the pizza was nevertheless excellent enough to get higher than average grades due to a solid sauce-to-crust ratio, a flavorful, sweet sauce, and a thick dough that was delightfully chewy and crunchy.
Tied for fourth place: Kwik Trip
- The facts and figures The product is known as Kitchen Cravings Cheese Mountain Pizza, and it is a standard crust 2-pound cheese pizza with mozzarella cheese. Both mozzarella and provolone cheeses are used in this recipe.
- There is a fee of $7.99 for this item.
The plot of the novel Not so much because of the pizza (although they didn’t enjoy it), but because it came from the much-loved Kwik Trip, which is home to many of the tasters’ favorite grab-and-go coffee, doughnuts, and even pizza (as long as it’s made in-house, according to the judge’s instructions).Despite the fact that my visitors generally enjoy Kwik Trip, their take-and-bake pizza lacked sufficient amounts of cheese.Or, most likely, there was simply too much sauce.
No matter how you slice it, the sauce-to-cheese ratio was incorrect.The tasters expressed their disappointment that they couldn’t detect any cheese due to the overwhelming presence of the sauce.In addition, the sauce’s flavor wasn’t really appealing.″It had an odd flavor to it,″ Kassidy added.Megan agreed with me.″The cheese was a strange combination as well.
This was a strange occurrence.″
Tied for fourth place: Sendik’s

The plot of the novel We learned from our Kwik Trip experience that too much sauce is not a good thing.The pizza from Sendik’s demonstrated that too little sauce may be just as unappealing.When it came to the flavor of the Sendik’s pizza, most individuals were not disappointed (except from one of our picky 11-year-olds, who described it as ″terrible″ and ″awful″), but they were skeptical about whether it could truly be considered a pizza due to the absence of sauce on the crust.
″There was no sauce,″ Mary stated emphatically.″There was a lot of cheese and it had a fantastic taste.Perhaps it was more of a quesadilla in shape?″ According to Catherine, it tasted more like a bagel or cheese balls, although my mother, Jean Euer, believed it tasted more like a cheesebread.Jonathan Schwabe, my spouse, agreed with me.″A cheesebread, rather than a pizza, is what it is.It’s not horrible, but it isn’t pizza, and that’s the difference.″
Last place: Aldi

Clearly, there must be a enough supply of cheese.And, when it came to the Aldi pizza, the comments were unanimous in their dissatisfaction with the crust, which everyone believed was excessively doughy.Take-and-bake pizzas can’t have a particularly thick crust, since if you cook them for an extended period of time, the cheese will become burnt.My mother-in-law and I both agreed that this was true.
The bottom line: Take-and-bake or frozen?
- At the end of our tasting test, there was a clear separation between what we considered to be the best three pizzas and what we considered to be the lowest three pizzas, as my husband characterized it.
- ″The top three pizzas were far better than the frozen ones,″ he stated.
- ″It’s probably best to buy frozen pizza for the bottom ones,″ says the chef.
- And that’s ultimately what families are interested in learning about their children.
- The vast majority of my visitors agreed that homemade pizza, takeaway pizza, and restaurant pizza are all superior to take-and-bake options.
- However, whether you’re seeking to give your family a quick supper at home on a weekday or buy many pizzas to bake for a group of kids during a sleepover, that’s not the standard to aim for.
The adults were unanimous in their response when I asked if they would prefer to buy take-and-bake over frozen.They indicated they would buy their favorites provided the price was appropriate.And, in most cases, it is — or comes close to being — true.After taking a tour along Pick ‘n Save’s frozen pizza aisle, I discovered that frozen pizza is available for a variety of rates, ranging from $2.49 for the Roma to $10.99 for the Brew Pub.
The average price was $5.04, which was lower than the costs for the top-ranked take-and-bake pizzas, but about the same as the price for Walmart’s third-ranked pizza, which was rated third.In addition, take-and-bake pizzas were often larger in size than frozen pizzas, so you’ll receive more pizza for your money if you buy take-and-bake.After our discussion about the advantages of frozen pizza vs take-and-bake pizza, the party began to wind down.After saying their goodbyes, my visitors made their way to the front door.

It is home to a dairy that is one of just a handful in the country that has particular credentials to allow the land of milk and honey to do what it does best: produce milk and honey.Rows and rows of pallets of cheese, line after line of delectable items being produced.The sheer volume of things required to serve 800+ retailers around the region with one-of-a-kind merchandise is mind-boggling.I had the pleasure of speaking with the brains behind Kwik Trip’s Research and Development Team on food and nutrition.
