Fansachi bhaji

Another seasonal recipe of summer that cannot be neglected!

The time when we are all obsessed with mangoes in summer, there is also a fruit that is a seasonal delicacy along the coastal region of Maharashtra.

Yes, I am talking about jackfruit or ‘fanas’ as we better know it.

It can be used as vegetable too when unripe.

It forms the integral part of Konkani, Malvani cuisines.

It is one of the vegetables that gives Malvani people the profile of being Malvani.

Preparation Time: 20 Minutes

Cook Time: 30 Minutes

Total Time: 50 Minutes

Serves for 3.

 

Ingredients:

1) 1 cup black peas

2) 1/2 kg raw jackfruit (small)

3) 3 tbsp oil

4) 1/2 tsp mustard seeds

5) Pinch of asafoetida

6) 4-5 crushed garlic gloves

7) 3-4 tsp malvani masala

8) 1/2 cup grated fresh coconut

9) Salt to taste

 

Method:

Soak black peas in 3 cups of water to 6 hours.

Apply a little oil to your palms and knife or vili and remove skin of jackfruit and cut into pieces.

Steam jackfruit in pressure cooker for 3 whistle. Remove from cooker and keep aside.

In a pressure cooker  cook soaked peas and keep aside.

Crushed boiled jackfruit cubes.

Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds, wait till crackle. Add asafoetida, add malavani masala and boiled black peas. Mix well and let it cook for 5 minutes.

Add crushed jackfruit and salt; mix well. Add little water and cook for five minutes on low heat with occasional stirring.

Remove from heat and serve hot.

 

How to prepare fansachi bhaji step by step:

4) In a pressure cooker  cook soaked peas and keep aside.

5) Crushed boiled jackfruit cubes.

6) Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds, wait till crackle. Add asafoetida, add malavani masala and boiled black peas. Mix well and let it cook for 5 minutes.

7) Add crushed jackfruit and salt mix well add little water and cook for five minutes on low heat stirring occasionally.

8) Remove from heat and serve hot.
