Dal Methi Usal | Traditional Maharashtrian Recipes

Preparation Time:  6-7 Hours For soaking

Cooking Time: 20 Minutes

Serves for 3.

Ingredients for Usal

1) 1 cup Toor Dal

2) 1 tbsp methi (Fenugreek) seeds

3)  3-4 Kokam

4) Red Chilly powder

5) Turmeric Powder

6) Salt

7) Jaggery

8) 2-3 Garlic

9) Chopped Coriander Leaves

 

Ingredients for Tempering:

1) Oil

2) 1 tsp Mustard Seeds

3) Hing

4) 3 Red chilli

Method:

Wash and soak Toor dal and fenugreek  seeds overnight separately.

After soaking drain it.

Prepare tempering for that add little oil, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds and  hing.

Add fenugreek seeds and  saute for a minute.

Add toor dal and again saute it.

Put lid or plate on it add some water on lid or plate and lets cook the vegetable on low flame for at least 10 minutes.

Now add hot 3 cup hot water and turmeric powder.

Let it cook for 15-20 minutes.

Do not overcook.

Add red chilli powder, salt, kokam, jaggery and crushed garlic and make usal.

Be careful while you saute should not break dal.

Once it done again prepare tempering by using remaining ingredient and pour the entire tempering on dal.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with chapati.
